The Sliding Action: Inside the bolo clasp, there is a mechanism—often a silicone or rubber lining or a metal tension device that holds the chains firmly in place by friction.

Sliding the clasp up the chains toward the center of the necklace decreases the size of the neck loop, making the necklace shorter.
Sliding the clasp down the chains toward the ends increases the size of the neck loop, making the necklace longer (down to the maximum length allowed by the chain).
