Deep Cleaning Guide: Restoring Heavily Tarnished Larimar Jewelry.

Using just a few everyday household ingredients, this simple method easily removes tarnish to leave your Marahlago jewelry sparkling clean. It's completely safe and gentle enough to protect your Larimar, pearls, accent stones, and the oxidized finishes of vintage styles.

You will need

  1. Small Bowl
  2. 1 sheet of tinfoil
  3. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  4. 1 teaspoon white salt
  5. 1/4 cup white vinegar
  6. 1/2 cup of boiling water
  7. Silver Polishing cloth

STEPS

  • Line the bottom of the bowl with the tinfoil, shiny side up.
  • Add the baking Soda and Salt.
  • Add the vinegar slowly and wait for the fizzing to subside and make sure that all the granules are dissolved (it is fine to add an extra splash of vinegar to help with this).
  • Add boiling water and stir thoroughly.

2 Add your jewelry to the bowl and ensure that the silver is in contact with the aluminum so that there is an electrolytic reaction, after a few minutes flip and leave it for a few more minutes. By now the solution will have cooled and the bubbles will have stopped forming and you should be able to see that tarnish has transfered from the silver and the surface of the foil is now grey and dirty.

3 Remove the jewelry and rinse away any residue under warm tap water.

4 Gently wipe with an absorbent towel to dry and then polish with a silver polishing cloth. Any tarnish not transferred to the foil should now be easy to remove. If the tarnish was very heavy and any remains on the silver, it may be neccesary to mix up a fresh batch of solution with new foil and redo the process.

5 For best results always store your silver jewelry in airtight poly bags to eliminate continued exposure to any airborne contaminants.
