With such a small deposit, the mining of Larimar is a delicate affair. It is mined only by hand up to 300 feet below ground. The veins and deposits can be quite small and often take months to locate. When a vein is found, it is followed for as long as possible. It is not unusual for miners to go many months without seeing a single piece of Larimar. And the 5 month Hurricane season has in the past shut down operations for an entire season.
There are many factors that limit the amount of this rare and precious stone available to us, but the effort is well worth it. Larimar is an amazing stone with great beauty, history and heritage.
Mining of Larimar is done by families living close to the mines. There are often entire generations working side by side. They consider themselves very fortunate that this beautiful gemstone's provenance is theirs alone, to support their families and community.
